Event Description:

Course Description
This 16-hour training program is designed to take the complex topic of a radiological incident response and break it down into 15 easily understood modules and hands-on exercises. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of radioactive material, radiological survey instruments, decontamination techniques, and resources available during a response. An important element of the training is detailed information on the types of packages used to transport radioactive material. The course includes use of “live” radiation sources in the practical exercises to reinforce learning. Upon successful completion of the training students will receive a certificate from the Department of Energy’s Transportation Emergency Preparedness Program, and 10 hours of continuing education hours (CEH) for medical response personnel. 

Course Content:

  • Radiological Basics, Biological Effects, Shipping Packages, Hazard Recognition, Initial Response Actions, Patient Handling and Prehospital Practices, Radiological Survey Instruments, Decontamination, Disposal, and Documentation, DOE Shipments, Resources and WIPP, Transportation by Rail, Transportation of Safeguards Material, Case History, Public Information Officer 

Hands-On Activities

  • Assessing Package Integrity, Contamination Surveys, Bunker Gear Decontamination Dress-down and Patient Gross Decontamination, Instrument Use

Student Criteria: 
This course is open to Fire, HazMat, Safety Officers, Rescue, Emergency Management, Medical, Environmental, Law Enforcement personnel or organizations having responsibility for mitigation of a hazardous materials incident. It is recommended that each student have basic radiological response training and be a qualified hazardous materials technician level responder. 

Special Notes: 
Advance student registration is REQUIRED and must be received by March 24, 2022 in order to participate in this course. Meals, lodging, and travel arrangements/expenses are the responsibility of the student. Students may be required to wear face mask. Students will need to be seated or spaced in accordance with health official’s recommendation of 6 feet apart. Instructors and facilitators will visually observe and assess all attendees throughout the event. Attendees displaying signs or symptoms of illness upon arrival will not be allowed entry, reentry or participation in training event.
