The Four Hug-A-Tree Rules
🌳 1. Tell an Adult Where You’re Going
Always tell someone where you’re going, who you’re with, and when you’ll be back.
🌳 2. If You’re Lost — Hug a Tree and Stay Put!
A tree gives you shelter and keeps you in one place so searchers can find you faster.
🌳 3. Keep Warm and Dry
Layer up, zip up, and stay off the cold ground. Even a small shelter helps.
🌳 4. Help Searchers Find You
Answer when you hear people calling, make noise, and leave signs to help them follow your trail.
About the Program
Originally developed after the 1981 search for Jimmy Beveridge, Hug-A-Tree and Survive teaches vital survival principles in a way children can easily remember.
It was later adapted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and enhanced by the National Search and Rescue Secretariat (NSS) and SARVAC in 2015 with updated videos and activities.
